Mobile Advertising Guidelines Get an Update
The Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) has released a new version of its Global Mobile Advertising Guidelines, which serve as a source of global formats, guidelines, and best practices for the implementation of mobile advertising campaigns.
"The updated guidelines reinforce the MMA’s longstanding pledge to provide its members and the wider industry with reliable standards and increased awareness of mobile advertising globally. MMA’s Global Mobile Advertising Guidelines will serve to simplify the deployment of mobile advertising campaigns whilst increasing their effectiveness," said Mike Wehrs, MMA President and CEO.
"The globalization of the mobile applications specifications in the latest edition of the guidelines is particularly important for the constantly growing and evolving mobile marketing industry to address," he added.
Key revisions of the guidelines include:
- Global requirements for Mobile Application ad units
- New advertising units and definitions across channels
- New length requirements for Mobile Video & TV ad units
- Recommended future mobile web banner ad requirements
The guidelines (pdf) are released every six months to ensure that they are up to date and reflect industry standards and feedback. They have been publishing the guidelines since 2005. They began globalizing them last year.
The MMA’s Mobile advertising committee members include AdMob, AT&T Mobility, Fox Interactive Media, Microsoft, Orange NSM, The Weather Channel, and Verizon Wireless, to name a few.

|Controversial Facebook App Lets Users Become Members of Al-Qaeda
Just days after a controversial poll about killing the president ran on Facebook, and attracted an investigation from the secret service, an interesting press release has hit the wires. The release is about a new game, which comes in the form of a Facebook app, and will no doubt draw additional controversy.
The game is called Al Qaeda Wars, and it lets users choose whether to be a terrorist or a counter-terrorist. The Game description says:
The time is now and you must choose a side in a war where each side thinks it is fighting for freedom. Put aside your humanity and enter the never ending battle that will take you around the globe to save or destroy millions of lives. You will have to decide to take the role as the Counter Terrorist Officer to save the world or fight as the Terrorist you secretly want to be. Unlock the Jihads, and take note to watch what and whom you will be asked to save and destroy, including your friends. There are no simple choices. These are the Al Qaeda Wars.
Here is an image taken from the official site of the game’s creator, Rage On Gaming:
An additional image shows a "U-Bomb" truck (which looks like a U-Haul) heading toward a real image of the Eiffel Tower. The game utilizes Google Maps, allowing users to zoom in on specific locations while launching attacks. Characters (or targets, rather) in the game have names like "Ronal Frump," "Pest Hilton," and "Simon Scowl."
Rage On Gaming says this is its first Facebook app, and warns that it’s "not suitable for everybody" because of dramatic violence. This should go over well.
eBay CEOs Slammed For Compensation Excess
eBay investors who are wondering where their money’s gone may be within their rights to hit up former CEO Meg Whitman and current chief exec John Donahoe for a few bucks.  This morning, Eric Jackson outlined some questionable compensation strategies that have seen both individuals take home a lot of money and also use a large amount for personal travel expenses.
Jackson, who is the founder and president of Ironfire Capital, wrote, "I believe Whitman deserves every nickel of compensation and stock sale proceeds she got between her joining the company in 1998 and Jan. 1, 2005.  Since then, however, eBay has been in a tailspin with the stock down 59% vs. a Nasdaq decline of 3% over the same period."
During that same timespan, Whitman’s total annual compensation headed in the opposite direction, increasing by about 379 percent and reaching $13.9 million.  Also, eBay shareholders had to pay about $1.8 million for Whitman’s personal aircraft costs in 2006 and 2007.
eBay shareholders can’t exactly breathe a sigh of relief now that Whitman’s gone, either.  Jackson wrote, "Donahoe racked up almost $280,000 worth of personal aircraft expenses in his first nine months on the job in 2008," and later added, "Donahoe made $13.1 million last year for his nine months as CEO, while eBay’s stock dropped 55%, far wider than Nasdaq’s 30% loss in that same period."
Meanwhile, eBay’s stock is down a tiny bit this morning, and a fresh report indicates that a number of Microsoft executives have actually taken pay cuts based on their company’s performance.
